History Intent Statement

At Berkswell, we want our children to develop a curiosity and fascination about Britain’s past and the wider world, building the knowledge and perspective they need to look forward with confidence and understanding. Our aim is for all pupils to gain a secure understanding of key historical periods and to ask thoughtful questions about causes, consequences and the impact of events. Through a coherent, well‑sequenced curriculum, children study:
- Ancient civilisations
- Changes within and beyond living memory
- Significant individuals
- Key events that have shaped society
We want pupils to enjoy and love learning about history through ‘WOW days’, artefacts, classroom experiences and educational visits that bring the past to life.
Our curriculum is designed so that every child can achieve, belong and thrive. We are committed to ensuring full access and success for all learners, including pupils with SEND, disabilities, those who are disadvantaged, pupils with English as an additional language, more able learners, and children from all social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Inclusion is central to our approach because every child deserves to feel valued, represented and supported to reach their potential. Through adaptive teaching, reasonable adjustments, assistive technology, and carefully chosen resources, we remove barriers so that all pupils can participate fully and make strong progress.
By exploring diverse people, places and cultures, pupils encounter both familiar and new perspectives, helping them feel included, represented and connected to the wider human story. High expectations, rich opportunities for enquiry, discussion and reflection, and a focus on identity and belonging enable pupils to develop secure historical understanding and to thrive as thoughtful, informed young learners.
