Music Intent Statement
At Berkswell School, we believe that music is a powerful and universal language that enables all children to express themselves, develop creativity and build confidence. Our Music curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of music while providing all pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become confident performers, composers and listeners. Through a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum, pupils experience a wide range of musical genres, traditions and cultures, developing an appreciation of music's role in both their own lives and the wider world.
We aim for all children to sing, perform, compose and listen with increasing confidence, accuracy and expression. Learning is carefully sequenced to build upon prior knowledge and develop pupils' understanding of the inter-related elements of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure. Through practical, engaging and meaningful musical experiences, pupils learn to work collaboratively, think creatively, reflect critically and communicate effectively.
Music also plays a vital role in supporting children's emotional wellbeing and personal development. Through singing, performing, listening and creating, pupils are given opportunities to express emotions, build self-esteem, develop resilience and experience a sense of belonging. Participating in music promotes positive mental health, reduces anxiety, encourages self-expression and fosters social connection through shared experiences and collaboration. Music provides a safe and inclusive environment where all children can experience success, celebrate achievements and develop confidence in themselves and others.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for every child to succeed regardless of prior experience, ensuring that high-quality music education is accessible to all. We strive to foster resilience, self-expression and a sense of achievement through performance and creativity, while nurturing an appreciation of diverse musical traditions and cultures. By the time pupils leave Berkswell School, they will have developed the musical knowledge, skills and enthusiasm needed to continue their musical journey.
