PSHE Curriculum Intent Statement

At Berkswell School, our Christian vision of love, togetherness and aspiration shapes every aspect of our work, including our approach to PSHE. The teaching of Christian Values is at the heart of our work; our children are encouraged and rewarded for displaying these values in everyday life.

We value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.

We recognise the importance of a high quality PSHE curriculum in developing the mental health and well-being of our children. PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It is designed to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our aim is to develop children with high levels of self-esteem and confidence, with the knowledge and skills to be able to assess risk and make informed decisions in life. We encourage our children to explore their rights and responsibilities while developing an appreciation of diversity and community. British values are integrated across the curriculum, supporting children to become respectful and responsible citizens.

Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. As a KiVa school, we work with our community to promote anti-bullying though a programme aimed at preventing bullying, including intervention and strategies to support children.

We adapt our RSE and PSHE curriculum to support all learners. Our Jigsaw curriculum is taught as a whole class and personalised for each individual where careful consideration is made regarding pupils’ personal, social and emotional needs when planning the delivery of particular topics. Through carefully structured PSHE lessons, we create a safe and nurturing environment where pupils feel confident to share their thoughts, helping them to develop their voice and prepare for life beyond the classroom.

Through our RSE curriculum, we aim to equip children with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to build healthy relationships, stay safe, manage their wellbeing and make informed choices. We highly value parental engagement in regard to our RSE curriculum coverage, as we believe that learning about growing up, relationships and change is most effective when schools and families work together.
