Science Intent Statement
At Berkswell School, our Christian vision of love, togetherness and aspiration shapes every aspect of our work, including our approach to science. We nurture children’s natural curiosity and help them develop a lifelong love of scientific learning.
We provide a creative and well-structured curriculum which ensures that children develop a strong understanding of fundamental scientific concepts, whilst developing the practical skills needed to investigate, question and solve problems. Collaborative learning and shared discovery are central to our approach. Children learn to communicate their ideas, listen to others, challenge thinking respectfully and build on one another’s insights. This strengthens scientific understanding, deepens reasoning skills and fosters a sense of collective achievement.
Our science curriculum is designed to be fully accessible to all learners, including those who are disadvantaged, pupils with English as an additional language, more able learners, and children from all social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Adaptive teaching plays a vital role in achieving this. Teachers use a range of approaches such as visual models and diagrams, structured talk, scaffolded tasks, targeted questioning, vocabulary pre‑teaching, practical exploration, and opportunities for deeper challenge to ensure that every child can access learning at an appropriate level. By tailoring support and challenge to individual needs, we remove barriers to learning, maintain high expectations for all and enable every pupil to participate meaningfully, develop confidence and experience success as a young scientist.
Our intent is to prepare children to thrive in an increasingly scientific and technological world. We empower them to recognise their responsibility as future citizens, understanding how their actions can influence the world around them in both positive and negative ways. By learning from scientists, both past and present, children gain insight into how scientific ideas develop, how evidence shapes decision‑making, and how individuals can make meaningful contributions to society.
Above all, we aim to give every child an enjoyable, inspiring and aspirational experience of science—one that nurtures deep, lasting interest and motivates them to continue exploring the scientific world.
