Pupil Leadership

Pupil leadership helps embed British Values by giving children real responsibility and a voice in school life.

Through roles such as School Councillors and Head Boy and Girl, KiVa Ambassadors, Eco Council etc, pupils experience democracy, uphold the rule of law, develop individual liberty and work respectfully with others.

These opportunities build confident, responsible citizens who contribute positively to our school community and modern Britain.

Head Boy and Girl

Each year candidates deliver their manifestoes to the school early in September before this is put to the whole school to vote.

Purpose of the Role

The Head Boy and Head Girl are role models who represent the pupils of the school. They help to promote the school's values, support staff and pupils, and act as positive ambassadors both within the school and in the wider community.

Main Responsibilities

Leadership

• Lead by example through excellent behaviour, manners and attitude.
• Demonstrate the school's values at all times.
• Encourage and support younger pupils.
• Help foster a positive and inclusive school environment.

Representation

• Represent the school at events, assemblies and special occasions.
• Welcome visitors and new pupils to the school.
• Speak on behalf of pupils when appropriate.
• Attend pupil leadership meetings and share ideas.

School Improvement

• Work with staff and the School Council to gather pupil views.
• Help organise school events, fundraising activities and charity projects.
• Support initiatives that improve the school community.
• Encourage pupils to take pride in their school.

Supporting Pupils

• Be approachable and willing to listen to other pupils.
• Help resolve minor issues by promoting kindness and respect.
• Support younger children during playtimes, events and transition activities.

The successful Head Boy or Head Girl should:

Essential Qualities

• Be responsible, reliable and trustworthy.
• Show excellent behaviour and attendance.
• Demonstrate confidence and good communication skills.
• Be respectful, kind and caring towards others.

• Show enthusiasm for school life.
• Be willing to take on additional responsibilities.

Desirable Qualities

• Experience in a leadership role such as School Council, House Captain or Playground Leader.
• Confidence when speaking in front of groups.
• Ability to organise and motivate others.

The Head Boy and Head Girl are expected to:

• Complete duties responsibly and punctually.
• Maintain confidentiality when appropriate.
• Demonstrate pride in the school and its achievements.

Active Play Heroes

Active Play Heroes help make playtimes fun, safe and inclusive for everyone. Their role is to encourage positive play by leading games, supporting younger pupils, and helping children join in activities so no one feels left out.

 They promote teamwork, fairness and good sportsmanship, modelling how to solve small disagreements calmly and kindly. Active Play Heroes help organise equipment, set up play zones and introduce new games that keep pupils active and engaged. By being friendly, responsible role models, they create a happy playground atmosphere where all children can enjoy active, healthy play.

 

KiVa Ambassadors

KiVa Ambassadors help promote a safe, supportive and inclusive school environment by leading the school’s anti‑bullying approach. Their role includes modelling positive behaviour, encouraging kindness, and helping pupils understand how to respond if they see or experience bullying.

They are clearly identified at playtimes through wearing tabards, this means children can access them if they need support or even help with particular friendship issues.

 

Eco-team

Each year pupils apply to be part of the Eco Team

The Eco Team helps drive environmental awareness and sustainable practices across the school. Their role includes promoting recycling, reducing waste, saving energy, and encouraging others to care for the environment.

 Eco Team members lead initiatives such as litter‑picking, monitoring classroom energy use, improving outdoor spaces, and supporting biodiversity projects.

They act as role models, educating their peers about environmental issues and have  helped  the schoolwork towards Eco‑School awards.

Through their leadership, pupils develop responsibility, teamwork, and a sense of stewardship for the planet.

 

School Council

The School Council represents the pupil voice and helps ensure children play an active part in shaping school life. Councillors are elected by their peers, giving pupils a real experience of democracy. Their role includes gathering ideas from classmates, discussing issues that matter to pupils, and working with staff to improve the school environment, learning experiences and wellbeing. They help lead projects such as charity events, behaviour initiatives, playground improvements and community links. As role models, councillors promote respect, responsibility and teamwork, showing others how to listen, collaborate and make thoughtful decisions. Through the School Council, pupils learn that their opinions matter and that they can make a positive difference to their school community.

 

Worship Leaders

Worship Leaders help shape and support the school’s collective worship by guiding pupils in reflection, celebration and spiritual growth. Their role includes preparing worship spaces, choosing songs or readings, leading prayers, and supporting staff during worships.

Worship Leaders model respect, kindness and responsibility, ensuring worship is inclusive and meaningful for everyone. Through their leadership, pupils develop confidence, teamwork and a deeper understanding of the school’s Christian ethos.

 

House Captains

Our House Captains at Berkswell CE Primary are exceptional role models for our students. They are selected from our exceptional Year 6 learners and are true leaders among their peers. Through their dedication and hard work, they inspire and motivate others to use our school reflecting our school vision of love, aspiration and togetherness – inspiring everyone to shine.

House Captains are selected by their house after a democratic vote; speeches allow house members to decide the best candidates.

As House Captains, they play a crucial role in fostering a positive and supportive environment within our school community. They lead by example, demonstrating the importance of teamwork and cooperation. Their enthusiasm and passion for their roles are contagious, encouraging others to get involved and make a difference.

They work with other leaders in the school, to plan and run events as well as creating inter-house competitions across the year
